I hated these boots in elementary school.  I remember wearing plastic bread bags on my feet inside them, because they didn’t actually work as boots.

Life On Mars? – 1954

In 1954 scientists had yet to launch the first artificial satellite. Those investigating Mars used ground-based telescopes, and waited years for the planet to come within close enough proximity to study it in detail.

The most recent opportunity for observing Mars occurred in 1941, inconveniently coinciding with World War II, after 1956 another chance wouldn’t arise until 1971.

Although a great deal was known about the planet, such as the composition of its atmosphere, much was left to speculation. Scientists still weren’t certain that ancient canals didn’t traverse the surface. More credibly, seasonal color changes around the polar ice caps led some to theorize that exotic plants, or other unknown life forms, might populate these areas.
